 VLC on Mac: How to Rip DVDs in Seconds

As much as we love physical media, you can’t beat the portability and convenience of digital media, especially on computers. If you’re anything like me, you’ve got hundreds of DVDs that you’ve purchased over the years, but it takes ages to open up each one and rip the files so they’re ready to view on your laptop or iPad. This can be even more frustrating if you don’t know how to rip DVDs with VLC on Mac at all! However, if you follow this easy guide, you’ll have it mastered in no time!

Start by getting your hands on a disc

You’ll need a disc for ripping. You can find a pre-owned DVD from your local video rental store or buy a new one from Amazon or other online retailers.

Navigate to your Applications folder

Finding and opening VLC is one of the most intuitive parts of this process. Simply navigate to your Applications folder, find VLC, and double-click it.

Open up Terminal

The first thing you want to do is open up Terminal. You can find it by going into Finder and typing Terminal into the search bar. Then click on the icon when you see it. When you first open Terminal, it will be blank, so type cd /Applications/Utilities/ and then press enter. Now type ./vlc dvdrip -I and press enter again. The DVD will automatically start ripping!

Type in the Command cd /Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/

Open the Terminal app, type cd and then drag the VLC application folder into the terminal window. Press enter.

Type /Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/. You should see a list of folders and files pop up, including DVD Ripper. Double click it, and a new window will open with the DVD Ripper interface. Insert a DVD into your computer’s disc drive and click on the Open Disc button at the bottom right-hand corner of the window.

Type vlc dvd://1

The first step is to open VLC. You can do this by clicking the VLC icon in your dock or search bar. Click Media and then click Open Disc (dvd://1).

Next, you will see a window that looks like the screenshot below. Click Browse next to Disc and find your DVD drive. You can find it by clicking Finder in your dock and looking for the DVD symbol.
